With much of the workforce approach- ing retirement, a whopping two-thirds of businesses are looking at staffing shortfalls, and com- panies are taking a cold, hard look at what they can do to reverse this trend. In this issue, Karen looks at the different factors shaping today’s workforce landscape. In manufacturing and trades, for example, we could be on the cusp of at last seeing the pendulum swing back – young workers and students are once again seeing the value and appeal of these sectors. Coupled with more companies recognizing skills beyond a four-year degree, new skill sets are being fostered and entirely new types of positions are being created at the intersection of high-tech and hands-on – what Ginni Rometty, former IBM CEO, refers to as “new collar” jobs. We still have a long way to go, however. For one, women remain underrepresented in sectors such as manufacturing, and “companies are taking a closer look at the environment on their floors and making changes to challenge harassment and create safer, more inclusive spaces for women,” writes Karen. Workplace culture must evolve with the times, and leading workplaces are recognizing that they must offer more than just a decent wage to gain – and retain – quality employees. Workforce Reset – Chasing Talent in a Vibrant New Economy examines the issue. This has been the reality for a number of sectors, including manufacturing – even in a pandemic. With the workforce largely approaching retirement, employers are under real pressure to find skilled workers in the face of unrelenting product demand. 5 BUSINESS IN FOCUS LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT FOR EXECUTIVE ASSISTANTS – LIVE VIRTUAL TRAINING 16 – 18 November, online Since the title was invented, administrative professionals have been vested with great power and unofficial leadership. INVESTS IN NEW OMNICHANNEL STRATEGY Levi Strauss and Co. has plans to open one hundred new stores in addition to the one hundred it opened last year, demonstrat- ing the strength of its in-person shopping experience despite the online sales boom resulting from the pandemic. During the 2020 fiscal year, a quarter of its sales came via online shopping, which is up from less than 10 percent in 2015. Part of the strategy includes scaling up investment in the digital experience while also prioritizing the in-person shopping experience. This omnichannel strategy has been a focus of the ETHOS ASSET MANAGEMENT INC. ANNOUNCES DEAL WITH TERRY REILLY HEALTH SERVICES (TRHS) U.S.-based Ethos Asset Management Inc., an independent company with global reach in resource mobilization and project financing capabilities, has established a partnership with non-profit health care provider Terry Reilly Health Services (TRHS) to provide long-term financing to improve the delivery of care in Idaho. Ethos will provide a capital infusion of $8 million made in a series of capital disbursements over the next year and has com- mitted to continuing to sustain and increase funding in the future by setting aside eight percent of its annual profits into its Philanthropic Financing Facility. The initial funding will support the construction of a new clinic that makes medical, dental, and behavioural health more acces- sible to rural residents in the state. TRHS’s integrated model enables doctors, dentists, and counsellors to work together under the same roof to offer patients coordinated care. retailer, who saw the slowdown of in-person shopping as an opportunity to test and scale its new model which allows cus- tomers to use its app to shop and have both curbside pickup and contactless return. The retailer has spent a great deal of effort rethinking its dis- tribution model and related infrastructure and found the omnichannel approach to produce inventory efficiencies and a lower cost of service. It has plans to adopt this model in Europe and other global markets as a result. The warehousing model is not as efficient as a store-by- store model where inventory is informed and driven by local customer data. Its app supplements this level of service with digitally focused features that are a rich source of data collec- tion from which decisions can be made. Levi Strauss and Co. has 3,000 stores and shops-in-shops, as well as a presence in other department stores and retailers, in addition to its online presence. It also introduced a new experi- ential store in Palo Alto, California last year as part of its push for more direct-to-consumer sales, which indicated a move away from the warehousing model. 7INDUSTRY NEWS GM THE FIRST TO USE NUCOR ECONIQ NET-ZERO STEEL GM is taking the next step in its efforts to decarbonize by being the first customer of Nucor’s Econiq net-zero steel in its manufacturing processes. The first shipment is expected next year and there is an expectation that all steel purchased by the automaker will be carbon-neutral by the end of 2022. Nucor uses recycled scrap-based electric arc furnace technol- ogy at every one of its U.S. steel mills and operates at seventy percent below the current steel industry greenhouse gas intensity. Econiq is made with one hundred percent renewable BUSINESS AVIATION COMMITS TO NET-ZERO CARBON EMISSIONS BY 2050 The National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) and other industry groups are doubling down on their commitment to net-zero carbon emissions, a commitment emphasized at the flagship private jet show in Las Vegas this year. Business aviation joined airlines, airports, and other industry players in strengthening plans to address climate change. An earlier pledge was made to halve emissions from 2005 levels by 2050 which coincides with an increasing desire from buyers who are looking for more efficient models and offsets, though none are postponing or delaying purchases as a result. Aviation only accounts for three percent of global carbon emis- sions, but a surge in private travel is increasing pressure on the business aviation industry to cut emissions. While this repre- sents only a fraction of the emissions compared to the com- mercial sector, private aviation generates more emissions on a per passenger basis. Plane manufacturers are using more recycled materials in their production processes and continue to seek out ways to lighten the aircraft in order to burn less fuel. The industry is also devel- oping the next generation of aircraft but the most effective way to reduce emissions would be the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) which is not yet widely available due to higher costs, though private clients are likely to pay more to ensure sustain- ability versus commercial passengers. energy and uses high quality carbon offsets to neutralize the remaining product emissions. GM is on track to reduce its carbon output in the U.S. by sourcing one hundred percent of the electricity used in its U.S. operations from renewable sources by 2025, which is five years sooner than originally planned and twenty-five years ahead of the first targets set in 2016. The automaker hopes to eliminate emissions from new light-duty vehicles as early as 2035 and achieve carbon neutrality in its global operations by 2040. 8INDUSTRY NEWS DOREL SELLING SPORT DIVISION FOR $810 MILLION Montreal-based Dorel Industries Inc. is selling its sport division, which includes its bicycle business, for $810 million to Dutch transportation conglomerate Pon Holdings B.V. Dorel plans to use the proceeds from the sale to reduce its debt load, return capital to shareholders and for general corporate purposes. It anticipates $735 million in net proceeds from the deal. Shares soared after news of the deal broke. Revenue in Dorel’s sport division increased 13.8 percent in 2020 to $265.3 million on increased demand for bikes and bike parts during COVID. Pon will acquire brands like Schwinn, Cannondale and G.T. and expects annual bicycle sales to reach $3.59 billion, making it one of the global leaders in bicycle manufacturing. The deal comes half a year after Cerberus Capital Management LP withdrew plans to take Dorel private for $437 million, the result of not receiving sufficient shareholder support for the deal. While Dorel recognizes the potential of the market, it wants to focus on its other business divisions and allow another company with the bandwidth the opportunity to take advan- tage of the strength of the market. EACOM INVESTING $10 MILLION IN NEW EMPLOYEE HOUSING EACOM Timber Corp. has plans to invest $10 million in new employee housing as part of its employee recruitment and retention efforts. The major wood products manufacturer plans to add twelve new international workers and their families over the next year and will build a new housing unit to replace the twelve existing housing units at its Gogama facility, one of seven it owns, to accommodate the growth. The new 44-unit housing complex will make up for the limited supply of available housing and will also include a food catering service. The idea for the project began two years ago and the company appointed a dedicated task force to get the ball rolling. EACOM has partnered with Sudbury-based recruitment firm IVEY Group who will be responsible for the operations of the facility including foodservice, housekeeping, maintenance and upkeep. IVEY will bring Timmins-based First Nations Industrial Systems onboard as well, staying true to the commitment to hire locally and strengthen the local and regional economy. 9Next >
